Issue brought to federal judge during 4 hour hearing.
On March 31, oil company TC Energy announced that they would be resuming construction on the greatly debated Keystone XL pipeline. The pipeline would carry crude oil across 1,200 miles of Canadian and American soil.
Native American tribe representatives immediately resumed their protest. They brought their concerns earlier this week to U.S. District Judge Brian Morris, citing previous spill disasters made by the company as well as the suspiciousness of the timing. “With the rise of the pandemic, it is even more important to protect the tribe to at least put a pause on this activity, take hard look at this,” said Matthew Campbell, an attorney for the Native American Rights Fund.
The planned construction camps would be able to house up to 1,000 workers, posing outbreak risk to rural areas. Judge Morris has yet to rule on the hearing.
